Silver Quality Award | Country Pursuits - Cheriton House Situated just 150 yards from the Ouse Valley Way and Houghton Meadow and close to several nature reserves, signposted cycle paths and footpaths - and all with no hills ! An ideal destination for anyone who enjoys the countryside-and we have some great pubs too! ![]() Walking/ Bird watching: * Houghton Meadow (just 200 yards from our front door) 20 acres of meadow, now carpeted by grassland which includes plants like green-winged orchid, yellow rattle, salad burnet and pepper saxifrage. Browns Meadow also provides good grazing after winter flooding each year. The hedges around the fields contain 18 species of tree and shrub which is rare in Eastern England. * Explore the Ouse Valley Way and over 26 miles of riverside walks with 6 itineraries/maps etc., varying from 2 miles upwards. * Visit the thicket, a 500 metre long steep bank of ash, field maple woodland and home to a variety of native woodland animals and plants. The presence of spurge laurel, an ancient woodland indicator, shows that this area of hillside has been covered by woodland for a long time. * Enjoy Kingfishers and the abundance of plants that provide food for the caterpillars of tortoise shell, peacock and red admiral butterflies at Holt Island, once an osier bed used for making willow baskets. * See all 3 species of British woodpecker along with kestrels, foxes and butterflies amongst the wealth of wild flowers at Hinchingbrooke Country Park . * Visit Portholme Meadow, the largest meadow in England ,almost completely surrounded by water with extensive footpaths around the site, this is a natural reservoir with large flocks of waders in the winter. Designated a site of special scientific interest there are many species of insects, grasses and wild flowers including the rare snakeshead frittilary Additionally, Paxton Pits, is an important birdwatching site with large numbers of nightingales to be heard in May. Other birds include cormorants, gadwall and tufted duck.
